Council Approves Henderson Library Expansion

Busiest regional Library to see significant expansion and renovation

City council approved this morning by a 10-4 vote a new lease of the Henderson Library that will see a significant expansion and renovation to the City's busiest regional library, with circulation of approximately 460,000 items per year after only the main Millennium Branch downtown.

"The Henderson Library has been located in the Rossmere Plaza Shopping Centre since 1961 and is a fixture of the local community," said North Kildonan Councillor Jeff Browaty. "I am pleased that we will be able to provide improved library services in this location which is both popular and convenient for so many residents of North Kildonan and East Kildonan.

The Henderson Library opened in a basement unit at the mall in 1961 as a partnership between the City of East Kildonan and the Municipalities of North Kildonan and East St. Paul. It is located In 1983 the branch moved to the current 12,060 square foot location. This new expansion will increase the size of the branch to approximately 18,000 square feet and provide significant new amenities.

"This library has totally outgrown its' space," according to Browaty. "I've dropped into the branch on occasions and found that the majority of the reading and studying spaces are being utilized. This expansion will allow for additional study space, community meeting rooms, a much needed refreshment of the current branch space and better space for the popular children's reading programs."

Detailed designs for the expanded space will be produced over the next several months with the expanded branch expected to open to the public in mid-2010.
